Towards a smarter home, part 4: That was easy (kinda)

I finally installed Home Assistant.

As you may have noted, I encounter a number of reasonably complicated problems beforehand, but may or may not have solved them. Now, with the help of a helper script, I have installed Home Assistant on my server, and it worked like gangbusters.

Using this guide (previously linked for installing Proxmox), and specifically the linked helper scripts, I now have a working instance of Home Assistant operating on my local network. It’s pretty cool! It automatically brought in a couple of my devices (specifically for some reason, my Google Chromecast, my Google Nest Hub, and my Google Nest Mini—but not my Google Nest Thermostat lol), and left me to my own devices (heh) to bring in a couple more (the Tapo devices, specifically). It seems my weird doorbell isn’t supported yet. Maybe. That’s too bad.

Playing around, it seems way more powerful than it is obtuse. That’s a good sign. I can turn on and off the lights that I have added. That’s a good sign.

I only have a couple more lights to play around with, and honestly not that many other devices yet to test. But everything is basically already on par with the advertising company’s home platform. I set up an automation to turn on the living room lights a half hour before sunset, but I can’t test it now because it is already too late. We’ll see what happens tomorrow to see if it works. I bet it will.

I also hear there are prettier dashboards. At least it’s a snowy weekend. I hope the power doesn’t go out.
