Watch: Today in Political Buffoonery

So you’re the unpopular governor of a state that hasn’t been doing well, and you’re having some issues in your reelection campaign. Your opponent is the relatively unpopular former governor, whose rank opportunism led him to switch parties. Yet, you’re polling neck-and-neck. Of course, the proper thing to do if you’re Florida Governor Rick Scott is to refuse to participate in the gubernatorial debate because your opponent, former governor Charlie Crist, had a little fan put in the base of his lectern. Because being a petulant little bitch is a good way to appeal to Florida voters? The Tampa Bay Times...

Politics are Stupid, Moderates Edition

There is no reason this sentence should ever exist: Wyllie (the Libertarian) gets his strongest support from independent voters who back Crist (the Democrat) over Scott (the Republican) 45 – 38 percent in a two-way matchup, but split with 36 percent for Crist and 34 percent for Scott, with 12 percent for Wyllie, in the three-way race. In other words, moderates are pretty much just people who have no fucking clue what the hell they’re voting for.

Republicans Supporting Non-Republicans

Interesting news from the Pennsylvania senate race today: Former Senator Chuck Hagel will endore Joe Sestak. Hagel was a Republican; Sestak is a Democrat running against Republican Pat Toomey. Hagel told The Associated Press on Monday that Sestak has demonstrated during his two terms in Congress that he puts what’s best for the country before the interests of his party. He said Sestak’s courage and integrity as a legislator are qualities the nation needs more of. This just shortly after we’ve learned that Bob Dole, former Republican senator and presidential candidate, has thrown a $1,000 check to...

Florida Governor Charlie Crist vetoes anti-abortion measure

Wait, is this the new Charlie Crist? Because I think I like the new Charlie Crist: Gov. Charlie Crist vetoed a Republican-backed bill that would have required women seeking a first-trimester abortion to pay for an ultrasound exam and, with few exceptions, view the image or have it described to them by their doctor. Crist, a former Republican who is running for the U.S. Senate as an independent, said in his veto message that requirement would put an “inappropriate burden” on women seeking abortions and violate their privacy rights.

Florida Governor Charlie Crist to run for Senate as independent

It’s been expected, but now it’s all but official: Aides confirm that Florida Governor Charlie Crist will, indeed, announce tomorrow that he will run for the U.S. Senate as an independent. Crist has been a Republican his entire career, but a run from former state House speaker Marco Rubio on his right has pushed him both out of the party primary and into the center. This, in effect, both blows up this race, as well as solidifying it earlier than the primary would have. Rubio now has a longer time to move center to try and court...
