January 6

Five years ago, the President of the United States instigated a violent insurrection with the aim of retaining power despite losing the presidential election.

Somehow, no action was taken about this, and he is once again the President of the United States.

January 6, 2021, is a date that should live in infamy, but sadly probably will not. Because everybody just moved on, forgot about it, and lived like it had never happened. Nearly an entire political party, deeply and unhealthily under the thumb of that president, pretended as if it was just a minor incident, no worries no action needed. And any action taken would be wrong, and political, and cynical, obviously.

The same party that screamed BENGHAZI every hour for what seems like 25 years.

Most people probably forgot about that day, but there are many of us who still remember it viscerally. I wasn’t one of the people in the Capitol Building, but I know people who were. I’ve been through the People’s House since that day and have seen the scars that still afflict the building. Holes in doors, dents in walls, marks on tables and desks. That building will forever bear those marks, as will our democracy.

For those of us who live in D.C. (a lot of people—and side note we could really use statehood), we not just watched it on TV, we saw it happen in our neighborhoods, and we were all scared it would spread to our part of town, our block, our house. Close enough to maybe even smell the mass of “humanity” that plunged the republic into darkness.

It sucked really bad, and it still sucks really bad. It sucks extremely bad that nobody was ever held accountable for it. An impeachment was tried, and very well executed, and ultimately failed. If you can’t be removed from office forever for performing a coup, what can you be removed from office for.

I’m not one to say “Won’t somebody think about the cops” but won’t somebody think about the cops? If the cops are this fucked up, imagine how fucked up the rest of us are.

A president who loved what he saw and refused to make any effort to stop it. A president who started it. A president who was openly okay with that crowd hanging his vice president unless that vice president still had the courage. As if breaking the law required courage for these folks.

He still says the election was stolen! Like every single day! And not a single person has even remotely pushed back! Nobody seems to notice or say anything about it anymore! He won an election again anyway! He pardoned all the motherfuckers who did it! I’m going crazy!

I told you up there what the date was. Do you remember? Let me give you a hint: it’s also the current date, minus five years.

The previous was just a cognitive test. The president takes several a day. Did you pass? I hope so, because our populace seems to fail about every couple of years.
