Predictions, 2026

Negative - 'Betty' Predicting Rain, Cardross District, Victoria, circa 1930

Wow still not used to typing “2026” even this late into the year. Anyways, everybody else is doing predictions, why not us? Let’s get started.

The economy will finally break down

Trump does seem to have the ability to escape gravity time and time again, but can number go up forever, despite him doing everything in his power to make number go down? The only thing anybody cares about is rising prices, and all he has done has been to make prices go further up. Despite what he says, consumers pay tariffs. Overwhelming immigration raids make construction more expensive.

Corporations are looking forward to their lower taxes next year from the One Big Beautiful Bill, but that boon is not coming to your ordinary citizens, many of whom are also losing benefits or assistance. And thanks to him and the Republican congress, a lot of people are going to either pay a lot more for health insurance this year or lose it altogether. That’s money they won’t be able to use for goods and services: you know, the economy.

Unemployment is still currently low, but the job market sucks. Nobody is hiring, and as such, nobody is quitting, and as such, nobody is hiring. They say it’s AI, but that’s bullshit. Nobody’s job is being taken over by the faulty autocorrect that drinks oceans and burps global warming because it doesn’t do anything.

It’s true as the adage goes, “Markets can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent,” but it’s hard to see it keep going when prices are outpacing wages and nobody is hiring. This plane has to land somewhere.

Democrats will retake the House

Bold, I know. The party out of power comes roaring back in the midterms—happens almost all the time, even to lame-duck presidents. Will this time be more or less than usual? I would tend to think more based on the entire fucking shit that is going on, but who knows what will happen between now and November that could change it. Will people suddenly back Republicans because of Somalis in Minnesota? Who the fuck knows.

The Senate I am less sanguine

You would think the Senate would be another sure thing, but good lord look at this current Cook Ratings Report. It would take an act of God to turn that oil tanker around. You think the Democrats are picking up fucking Texas? I could be convinced a good candidate could make Iowa a contest, but that’s unlikely. And no, they are not taking Kentucky.

Will he [redacted]

Look. Move along.

The next iPhone will be pretty cool

Rumors are rife about a new iPhone format. I’m sure it will be fine, if it happens. The other ones will also be fine. They’re pretty cool machines. It’s wild I have access to Wikipedia from basically anywhere, and the rectangle plays all my records. The next ones are going to sell well and Apple will make tons of money. You heard it here first, folks.

The Supreme Court will hand down one surprising (good) ruling

This is how they stay relevant. Twenty decisions basically saying Trump can be king, but they they pick one little case where they say he can’t (for this particular issue). I would hazard a guess that it’s going to be one of the tariffs cases, if for no other reason than it’s the most obviously illegal thing Trump is doing but also I don’t think the Court cares about economics. A bunch of lawyers wouldn’t be Supreme Court justices if they cared about economics. I think they’ll shut down most of the tariffs but will let him continue on some others. Boring, I know, but so is this Court.

Clarence Thomas will retire

Speaking of the Court, about time, right? I think the end of this Court term will mark the end of Clarence Thomas’s career. He clearly loves being on the Court (despite the span of years where he asked no questions) but he definitely wants to be replaced by Trump or his like, and this is his best bet, even if (as I expect) the Republicans keep the Senate after this year.

Electricity prices will continue to climb

Number may stop going up, but electricity prices are definitely going to continue going up. And I think they will actually go up a lot. Data centers are continuing to hit the grid hard, and Trump is doing everything in his power to stop solar and wind plants from coming online. Sure, he forced an unnecessary coal-fired plant to stay open, but that’s not enough to keep prices down.

U.S. Men’s National Team will win the World Cup

lol, lmao
