Monday Gripe

Story time!  I live in a basement apartment.  It can be kind of cave-like, but mostly it’s fine, and stays cool in the summer, which has been a big plus given the recent heat.

I thought the big downside was the lack of windows, but then last week the apartment flooded, and that was maybe worse.  Luckily, I  got home in time to unclog the drain outside the back door, and although there was an inch or so of water in the hallway by that time, my roommate and I got it cleaned up and there was no real damage.  Other than my room still smells funky, but hopefully that will get resolved too.

So like the responsible tenant I am, I wrote a quick note to the landlord’s office, just alerting them to the fact that this had happened. Not asking for anything from them, just keeping them in the loop.  Here is, verbatim, the email I received back:

Thank you for keeping me informed.  Until you live through it you do not realise how important it is to keep the areaway and drains clear.  I bet that is the last time that happens.
Cheers,

Snark much?  Would it have been that hard to start with a simple “I’m sorry about the flooding” or “I’m glad there wasn’t any damage”?  Considering that the drain gets clogged with stuff that gets swept down there when it rains, it’s hard to figure out how to keep the drains clear such that this wouldn’t happen again.  Love the “Cheers” at the end, too.
