No hung parliament here

With the 6 May election coming up in the U.K., there have been a great many predictions of the outcome, and most of them entail either an outright Tory win, or, more likely, a hung parliament. Of course, the obvious next prediction to make, at least by those who are paid to predict outcomes, is how the hung parliament will be structured, and, most importantly, which side will the Liberal Democrats, the perpetual third party who have not enjoyed any power since World War II, will join.

It’s pretty much accepted that, given a hung parliament, whichever side that can pull the Liberal Democrats will “win” the election. Naturally, the Lib Dems aren’t saying what their strategy will be post-election. But, there is one man—a man of vision—who has the balls to make what seems a pretty bold prediction: That the Lib Dems can, and quite possibly will, win this election. Outright. Who is this man, this visionary, this reader of the tea leaves?

This guy.

Yup, Howard Dean, 2004 presidential contender and chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 2005-2009, thinks that the Lib Dems, with Nick Clegg has their leader, could win the 6 May election outright:

Speaking on the Washington Journal, simulcast on US network C-Span and BBC Parliament, he said: “I don’t think there’ll ever be a coalition between the Liberals and the Labour government.

“I know the Liberals, I know Nick Clegg very well, and he intends to win this and I think they could.

“So you may have a hung Parliament but I think you won’t have a coalition. At least not that coalition going forward.”

Asked if Mr Clegg could be the next British prime minister, Mr Dean said: “I think he could”.

As says a friend of mine, who will remain anonymous for the time being: “There is a reason my philosophical leaning will always be with Dean and the Lib Dems, but never, ever, let them influence any bet you have on anything.”
